Neuropathy refers to a group of conditions caused by damage or dysfunction of the peripheral nerves - the nerves that connect the brain and spinal cord with the rest of the body. It most commonly affects the hands and feet and may develop gradually or occur more suddenly, depending on its underlying cause.
Neuropathy can affect sensory, motor, or autonomic nerves, resulting in symptoms that vary from person to person. Common symptoms include numbness, tingling, burning sensations, nerve pain, increased sensitivity, or weakness.
Numbness or reduced sensation
Tingling or "pins and needles"
Burning or shooting nerve pain
Increased sensitivity to touch
Muscle weakness
Problems with balance or coordination
Neuropathy can have many possible causes, including diabetes, certain medications, nutritional deficiencies, infections, and other underlying conditions. Identifying and addressing the underlying cause, together with appropriate medical management, is an important part of care.
